What's Your Reader Of Choice?

I'd be lying like a rug if I didn't say that I want an iPad or a Kindle.  Honestly, I haven't researched either very much. What I DO know is that they seem and look cool.  They obviously serve a great purpose and save lots of trees. To that end, I appreciate the technology which enables readers to hold a small library of books in one contraption. But in my sometimes old-school sensibilities: I love an actual dog-eared page ...especially with magazines.

I've noticed that the Kindle's price is plummeting.  Mr TBS has expressed a slight interest in having one, so I need to begin my research.

Do you use a reader? Like it? Not? If you haven't opted for a reader, why?

  1. I've been throwing hints around to certain people that I want a book reader..lol..and I have researched them. From what I have discovered, the NOOK is going to be the best of the three. Simply because of price and what it does. Now you can download the NOOK app to an iPAD, but as you know any thing with a little "i" has a big price tag! With the NOOK you can share and borrow books w/ and from people, which you can't do with a kindle. They are roughly the same price. I'm sure the iPAD will out do both, but it's really expensive!! and if you're broke, this won't fit into your budget!

  2. I prefer the feel of a book. I use my iPhone for so many things as it is (talking, e-mailing texting, tweeting, Facebook-ing(so not a word!)) so at the end of the day when I have time to read, I like to be able to feel the pages. I also like the feel of newspapers and magazines as well. I'm trying to get use to reading them online but I'm not there....yet.

  3. My husband just got a Kindle, and I have to say, I'm a little jealous. The e-paper is amazing, it's light, has built-in wifi and a web browser...really, for reading, I think it beats the iPad hands down. Plus, if I decide to get one, we can share books between the devices as long as we purchase them through the same account. Not too shabby for $139.

  4. iPad! I love it except is a little difficult to see by the pool.

  5. I may change my mind in the future but readers really don't interest me right now. Hubby and I collect books and both agree we like to hold an actual book instead of just another screen.

  6. I have an iPad, and I love it with a passion normally reserved for a mint-condition '57 Chevy or the Holy Virgin Mary.

Turning the pages is so life-life that sometimes I still catch myself licking my finger, as gross as that sounds.

What I really love about it is that I can go to the bookstore 24 glorious hours a day. I've also subscribed to a couple of magazines through Zinio, and they look great.

The photo quality is great, and the photo-editing apps are out-standing. They're not Photoshop, not by any stretch of the imagination, but I've got computers for that, but they do a much better than adequate job for your day-to-day needs.

It was worth the cash to me to be able to have my world in my pocketbook, and that's saying something, because I have been known to make that eagle on the dollar bill scream.

  7. Nothing like the real feeling of turning book pages - I'll still to my paper & hard backs :-P

  8. I still love actual books, but I'm truly smitten with my Kindle. I did the most basic research and mentioned that I wanted on to hubby. I received a Kindle for my bday and have been digging it ever since.

  10. iPad. It's my most favorite of things and I keep it with me always! GO ME!

('Cept that right now my husband is currently posted up with my iPad playing Angry Birds. *sigh*)

  11. @Susan- you sold that iPad!! I've been wanting one and you have really sealed the deal. You must be in sales! LOL BTW I didn't know you could get magazines!!

  12. I researched both including the Nook. And after pricing the IPAD I chose the Nook. I read a least 3 books at a time. It was hard dragging them around. The Ipad was too costly and it was too much of a distraction. I would be surfing the web, checking email, and watching video. When I read I want to be focused. I love the Nook's touch screen that's in color. You view your books as the real covers in color. And the fact that you can read books free in the store for 1 hour a day; to check it out before you buy it. You can also let a friend borrow a book for 14 days. Someone told me that the Ipad gets hot; the Nook doesn't. I still love paper books too! Good luck!

  13. I also prefer the feel of a good book in my hands! Nothing against technology...but I get excited when I walk into a bookstore and see who's #1 on the NY Bestseller's list or in the library to browse the classics and new additions! -pearls

  14. I love techy gadgets, but I'm traditional when it comes to books. There's nothing like the crisp texture and smell of a book. It's an integral part of the reading experience for me. I find reading a screen functional, but rather cold and impersonal at the same time.

  15. I have the Barnes and Noble nook. It's really not a fair comparison to the iPad, because the iPad is not marketed as an e-reader so it has more bells and whistles than the Kindle or the nook. However, the nook is better for me because it does allow you to lend books to other nook apps, meaning you don't have to actually have a nook to borrow a book from an actual nook owner. You can also check books out from the public library. You can't with the Kindle. The Sony e-reader allows you to check out library books as well. The Kindle only loads Amazon purchased books, the nook allows you to load any that are epubs or PDFs and a few other extension, but you don't HAVE to buy from Barnes and Noble. You also get to load your own pictures as screensavers and wallpaper. You can't do that with the Kindle. Barnes and Noble also just ended a summer promotion of getting 10 free classics every Friday, they also have a library of over 900,000 free books. Inkmesh does allow you access to free books for all three e-readers (Kindle, nook and Sony). Yes I love my nook. Sorry for blogging in your comments. LOL

  16. I actually wrote an article for Technorati a few weeks ago about this ... I love both but they are two different things...

  17. The iPad also has a huge library of free books, and there's a Kindle app, too. You can also get book samples that are at least 50 pages long.

I just came back from a trip where, once I got there, I realized I'd left my little baggie of chargers at home, and I found that the same charger that works for my iPad works for my iPhone, so score!

No, Celeste, I'm not in sales, but if I like something (or somebody), I really, really like them. And I like putting people and things together. Get the iPad! It will change everything for you. But get the el cheapo cover at the Apple Store - it turns into its own stand so you can use it as a cookbook in the kitchen.

Somebody stop me - I'm running off at the mouth!

  18. I love actually holding a book or magazine in my hands, although, with that being said, I can imagine when I'm trying to eat and read its much easier to do it with an e-reader. lol. I think I would go for the iPad just because it's so much more than just an e-reader.

  19. I have read more books on my iPad in the last quarter than I did all of 2009.

  20. I love the feeling of books ... I am a true bibliophile. However, I am saving up for an iPad or a Nook -the fact that I may be able to put my textbooks on there is a big draw for me ( future grad student + plus Im pre-med = heavy textbooks). I dont really need the iPad since I have a MacBook and a iTouch , but it would be nice to have .

  21. I just can't bring myself to want an ereader. I've looked at a few but just felt "eh" about them. My husband keeps asking me if I want one, and I've told him no repeatedly - I'll probably still end up with one for my birthday or Christmas...

I'm a big fan of the public library - free books that I can return and not clutter my house with? Oh yeah!

  22. I didn't want a reader because I prefer the feel of paper in my hands. And then I got an iPad. Besides all the other glorious features, I LOVE the Kindle app. To be honest, I don't like reading with the iPad in bed...too much light...and I still prefer paper books, but it's so handy when traveling because I can just bring 1 iPad instead of 3 books. And if I read through all the books, then I can just download more. Unlike the time when I read through all my paper books that I brought on a remote vacation spot and I was forced to buy Confessions of a Shopaholic from the hotel gift shop to read. Believe me, it was the best book they had.

Also, I love reading the Bible on my iPad. I highlight passages.

  23. Haven't tried the others, but I do love my Kindle!

  24. I have been reading on my kindle for over a year. I love it as much as a person can love a non-living thing. It's so easy to purchase a book anywhere, anytime. On a recent trip to Italy, I didn't have to tote 3-4 books for the plane, just the kindle. My husband recently purchased an iPad, not just for the reader. It's advantage come late at night when you are reading in bed. Since it is lit no book light is required. However, beachside the kindle wins hands down.

  25. I'm old school all the way but the Kindle has changed my life!! I didn't research all the choices just went for the Kindle. When I read a magazine article and it mentions a book I think I might like I simply order up a sample on my Kindle. And, this is the best, it's great for reading in bed. I lie on my right side, all I have to do is hit "next page" no rearranging yourself when you turn the page it's always just plumb in front of you. We have 7 bookcases in the house loaded with books - it was time for me to move on and I haven't regretted it one bit!!!
