Hello. My Name Is The Broke Socialite...

....and I am a chronic thrifter.

I see possibilities in pieces that others pass by without as much as a second thought.
I love taking something that might not be the most aesthetically pleasing and making it a masterpiece. Sometimes beauty is in the eye of the beholder and just a little bit of TLC is necessary.

Last Friday, I saw this dresser on Craigslist. I've been looking for a French provencial to go behind the large couch in the family room. For a couple of years now.

The dresser was at an estate sale in my hometown. How ironic! The sad part is that I couldn't get to it on Saturday morning. Enter my old friend Chris. He was such a dear. I asked him if he would get up early on Saturday and stalk pick it up for me. Thank God he obliged (little did he know that our friendship hinged upon it...ha!). It was only $73! Yes. $73.

Isn't it the best?! Where I usually fall down in my thrifting is NOT actually rehabbing my finds but this go 'round, I have an Atlanta support team in Studio 1270, Roslyn and BluLabel Bungalow. Phew! I also have my girl, TamStyles, as inspiration. I've been lurking on Tam's blog as she has fearlessly refinished several projects.

My plan is to paint it a Tiffany blue with a greenish undertone (hard to explain) and add "crystal" knobs but I don't know. I like Tam's ivory and silver, too. What to do?

All that's left now is for Daddy TBS to pick up the dresser from Chris this week and bring it to me. Sweet!

What do you think? Have you purchased any thrift items lately?

  1. I'm jealous of your hunting prowess. This dresser is a find. In my QoC world it would be painted coral but blue-green is lovely, too! Have a great day.

  2. I wish I had the creative talent (and time) to refurbish furniture and things. I watch HGTV like a freak and I love the makeover shows. But I don't think I have the eye to see the potential in older pieces. I just go to Rooms To Go, buy the whole room, and organize it exactly like it was in the store!

  3. I LOVE IT, what a great find! Craigslisting is my favorite pastime. My husband would say obsession. Potato - Patahto. I think I'm envisioning what you have in mind and j'adore the idea of crystal knobs. Don't let the task psych you out. Check out the old painted cottage blog for inspiration, particularly the cottage 8 reno. You can do it!

  4. I am so excited for you!! That will look fabulous when you are done with it. I am a chronic thrifer in training thanks to my Mom - my dining room table WAS a junk discard table at a yard sale, but POOF! A coat of dark dark brown paint later, and the thing is completely Pottery Barn. I love doing that!!

  6. It's a great piece that will look amazing with the colors you've selected! I am an AVID thrifter (I go almost everyday) and love refinishing furniture. I found 2 great chairs on craigslist for $25 yesterday (on my blog) and I'm working on refinishing a desk right now. Can't wait to see how this turns out!
