"I was out with an old friend who brought along a friend and a friend of that friend who I didn't know. I offered the friend of a friend some of my appetizer and she DOUBLE DIPPED! Gasp! I am a serious germaphobe, but I didn't want to make a scene and embarrass my friend. I quickly grabbed the dipping sauce and tried to salvage the half that she did not dip into, but I was pissed. When she sees me do this, she goes, "Oh, I was looking for a spoon." Was she really? What would you have done?"
What would YOU do?

I agree, this is utterly disgusting. I had an aunt who did this during Christmas Eve with the shrimp cocktail. My kids were the ones to bring it to my attention. My son who was 9 at the time couldn't believe that an older person would do that, didn't she know you weren't suppose to? Of course she did. We didn't have any more cocktail sauce so we took it away and threw it out. She asked where it went and I said that the kids dropped some food in it. Now in your situation, man the friend had some gall, I would've either:
ReplyDeleteA) Not eat it, this person would most likely continue to keep double dipping.
or
B) I would've tried to salvage it like you did and if she questioned I would've said I thought I saw something fall into it.
Farrah's idea is a good one that gives you a reasonable out without making your guest feel bad. That's what etiquette is about, right? Good grace in the face of utterly disgusting behavior.
ReplyDeleteI would have just eaten the chips.
ReplyDeleteAfter seeing that picture of spinach dip, I felt a personal investment in this story because I know I would have been sooooo irritated. I love spinach dip. Farrah is right and I like Kim's words- 'Good grace in the face of utterly disgusting behavior'. Have a wonderful day, TBS!
ReplyDeleteI am so disgusted! The old me probably would have called her out about it and not cared that I hurt her feelings. My thought would have been "She's not my friend so why do I care if she's embarrassed."
ReplyDeleteThe new and always-trying-to-improve me would handle it more graciously. Once she had said she was looking for a spoon I would say "Oh, well let's ask the server to get us one and an extra plate." Then I would MAKE SURE she scooped out from the double dipped side onto her own plate.
This way no one is embarassed and hopefully *fingers crossed* she will be more conscious of this disgusting habit the next time she goes out with someone else.
Get over it already.....I am tired of germaphobes...no hugging, no kissing, no shaking hands....we are turning into a country of weirdos who don't want any human contact...it's not gonna kill you to eat the darn dip and just get on with it...
ReplyDeleteWell, I wouldn't have offered her my own plate but rather would have scooped some of the dip onto a plate for her to taste. Since that didn't happen I would have just offered her the rest.
ReplyDeleteEither stop eating or order my own dip.
ReplyDeleteI might not have dipped from the un-used side, but just not eat any more. Im a germaphobe too!!! LOL But I did see an episode of Myth Busters where they debunked the "double dipping" horror. Still, I can't tolerate double dippers, even if I don't say anything.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Deborah. Get over it already.
ReplyDeleteI am not a germophobe but that is nasty.
ReplyDeleteFor the people that said get over it, let me the know the next time that you go out to eat so I can stop by your table and try your food. :)
I don't make a habit of eating after strangers, but I would assume that were you with a friend of mine, you'd be okay. So if you stop by my table with some friend of mine and want a taste, I'll put a bite on my bread plate for you.
ReplyDeleteIf you just dug in of your own volition, I might look askance at you, but I'm not running a comportment school for girls here.
Double-dipping is gross in theory, as well as tacky, but actually, the Mythbusters tested it, and there's so much bacteria already inherent in the dip that the mouth-to-chip-to-dip transfer is negligable in comparison. So, germophobes, time to stop eating!
ReplyDeleteWow such bad manners, I would just give the person the food since they double dipped.
ReplyDeleteWorse manners, imho, to make the other person feel badly for double-dipping... or talking with their mouth full.. or whatever other etiquette faux pas you observe.
ReplyDeletei would actually tell her i dont approve on ppl double dipping in my food and thats just something u dont do to ppl u dont know
