Modern Manners Monday: What Would You Do?

You've received an invitation from a great friend for Thanksgiving. You gladly accept.  The day before Turkey Day when you call to ask if you can bring anything, she reveals that she has opted not to prepare a traditional (turkey, stuffing, et al) and has opted for a more avant garde approach to her menu.  As a matter of fact, she has decided to totally flip the script and prepare a low country boil.  You're a traditional meal type of person.

What do you do?

  1. She's doing everyone a disservice. Expectations are set when you are invited for "Thanksgiving." That said, you've accepted, and etiquette says you've got to at least pretend it's about the company and not the food:). The week for Thanksgiving restaurants often serve turkey dinners with stuffing and gravy and cranberry. There's another way to get your fix, sad though it may be. And yes, I'm a traditional meal type myself.

  2. You are cute to die for:). I love you too. Mutual admiration society.

  3. I agree with LPC. If she had included a note saying it wasn't a traditional menu, you could have prepared a little something for home. A turkey breast and some sides in lieu of a whole turkey with all the trimmings. That way you could fully enjoy her offerings knowing what awaites you at home.

  4. well my first reaction ( not always the best but at least I'm being honest ).... enjoy the low country boil with ALOTS OF BEVERAGES... who know maybe it will all work itself out...or maybe the beverages will over-ride you mouth and in that case you can say you were just drunk and stupid.

Otherwise, hold your chin up..deal with it and enjoy the company and time with your "great friend" then next year invite them to your REAL Thanksgiving!

  5. Okay let's define "Great Friend". For the purposes of this comment "Great Friend" to me translates to Good Good Girlfriend (GGF) and not just “Great” because they thought enough of me to invite me over for Thanksgiving. That out of the way, my 1st response would be, "Da Hell you say?" No worries, super Fergie to the rescue. In true southern fashion I would have already prepared our meal anyway, so I would just pack up our vittles and add them to girlfriends menu.

Now if this is not a GGF, I'd roll with the punches and eat what is prepared and come home and get my grub on, kind of like I did when we went to my husbands coworkers house for the 4th, and no one told me they were Vegetarians. No meat on the 4th of July..."Da Hell?"

  6. well i'm gonna be the wild hare here. if a ggf invites me to share tgiving dinner, i go and eat what she's serving. period. i may take something to share like wine or a traditional dessert if i so desire but good manners dictate you eat what the host prepares and is gracious enough to invite you to share with them.

  7. This wouldn't be a problem for me because I always cook our traditional meal anyway at our home. That said...we'd go have the froo-froo food and then our real meal when we return home. :)

  8. I would go to the dinner, enjoy the food and the company, and cheers the fresh perspective. After all, they do still sell turkeys the day after Thanksgiving & they're likely on SALE!

had previously left off a few letters, apologize for the delete ;-)

  9. Well....having a deadly seafood allergy, I suppose I would have an easy out. ; )

Assuming it was another non-traditional menu item, I would attend and plan a smaller Thanksgiving turkey over the weekend.

  10. I have had this happen before...sorta! My friend and her hubby had recently began to transition to a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle. She had mentioned it in passing and I knew she hadnt given up meat & poultry completely yet, so I had no idea they decided to do a veg Thanksgiving. I'm open minded, but vegetarian/vegan, I am not! It was my first Tofurkey experience and it wasnt all that bad.

I'm down for whatever (within reason) so a seafood pot wouldnt bother me. If I really need to eat some turkey then I'd cook something at home and eat before or after my friend's shindig. But I wouldnt say a word to her about my surprise of not having turkey and all the fixings.

  12. I'm not a big traditional Thanksgiving meal person, so it wouldn't be a big deal to me...as long as there is food there, I'm good. Now, if there is no dessert...well then then that's a problem!

  13. Well, first I would die. I would absolutely die. Thanksgiving is my favorite day of the year with my favorite meal of the year. But after resurrecting myself, I would probably go out and pick up some prepared roast turkey breast to bring along.
