How To Be The Perfect Host & Guest aka I Am OB-SESSED With Harriette Cole

Let me see.  My obsession with Harriette Cole began nearly 15 years ago when I came upon her manual of manners, How To Be: A Guide To Contemporary Living for African Americans (but truth be told, most of the content transcends race and is just good, old-fashioned home training).  I have enjoyed following her career as a tastemaker, journalist, lifestyle guru and all-around bon vivant.  Harriette recently transitioned back from Creative Director of Ebony magazine to running her own empire again.  In my head, we are girlfriends.  She offers the best tips in a recent appearance on The Today Show.

What is your favorite gesture when you are a host and/or guest?

  1. I loved her segment, great show! When hosting, always have a lil keepsake for your guests to take home and a lil extra stash just in case a surprise guest shows up or someone brings someone else along.

  3. I love to set out a little basket of my from scratch sour cream biscuits or buttermilk scones with a variety of teas. I have the coffee pot ready to go as well (it's all in the choices), nice and strong. And of course strawberries. That way when the guests get up and I'm out in the garden, they can help themselves. 4. I have been OB-sessed with Harriet Cole since reading her books. Thus, my fix with reading your blog. Yeah, I can see you two being friends. Thanks for great blogs. I love what you are doing. I am INSPIRED!

  5. I had never heard of her before this post but she sounds marvelous! I'm Jamaican so it's only customary that when older people come over we immediately offer tea for the younger people a drink. I have to find that book now!

  6. I love the guest robe idea. That is very nice. I usually bake something before they arrive so not only does the house smell good, but they can rest and have a light snack and a drink before they unpack.

  7. Her presentation is even heart-warming! Her appreciation and thoughtfulness of people and life exudes through her character! Her book is a 'must' have. Thank you for sharing this clip!

  8. Harriette Cole is delightful! And those were great tips on the Today segment. In the guest room, I like to supply a robe and hangers and a luggage rack or other surface on which to place luggage. Also, a carafe of water on a tray. And in the kitchen, I set up a "morning tray" with whatever the guest prefers in the way of coffee, tea, creamer, sugar, sweeteners, etc.
