Modern Manners Monday: What Would YOU Do?

You've recently been laid off from your job. You're really not sure about what your next move might be but you've enough in your savings to tide you over for a while; so you're in no hurry.

You've a friend who continues to ask you about which sites your using during your search and is constantly sending you job leads. You've told her (quite nicely, even) that you are taking your time and are waiting for the right opportunity to come along. She continues to send you leads on an unsolicited basis. All day. Every day.

What do YOU do?

  1. I would let her continue to send them. Although she may not be looking now, she may come across an opportunity that she may have not discovered if not for her friend. Plus I would not want to hurt her feelings. Receive them and file them away. When she is ready she can always go back and look.

  2. An email 'rule/filter' can send the emails to the trash folder temporarily. Obviously don't just use the friend's email address, but use maybe the jobsite names AND her email together, so as not to miss the friend's regular emails or to lose all jobsite emails. This way the friend's leads are never seen & out of mind. It can be deleted later if the job leads are wanted. Maybe tell her there's a new 'employment only' email you use, and have her send the leads to an email you never check?

Otherwise, be bluntly rude and say to stop immediately because it's ruining the friendship. Or passively/aggressively make a rule that sends them all right back to her! ;-)

  3. I wouldn't say anything. There is always the "DELETE" button. You never know, she may send something great!

I agree with Jennifer. I'd set up a folder and glance at them weekly. You just never know.

And if she's calling too much asking about your search (people mean well but it can be too much, dependent upon the day), send her to VM and call back when you are able to. Or feel like it.

  5. I would let her send them. She means well (hopefully)!
