Oh, Deer!

I'm a stickler for proper grammar...y'all (Southern colloquialisms aside) have likely learned that over these past 5 years. Please rest assured that the title of today's post is NOT a typo.  When I said that I was grateful to be alive on my birthday, I could not have meant it more.

As it turns out, I was in a car accident on my birthday eve.  It seems that a deer and I were attempting to occupy the same space (I in my station wagon and him via a leap) simultaneously.  Yes...a deer crashed into me.  I was driving in an unfamiliar area so I was not going very fast but I never saw him coming.  Since there was no shoulder, I had to drive (shattered windshield and all) to the entrance of a subdivision.  It was there that I immediately called 911.  The person who was driving immediately behind me witnessed the collision, of course, and was kind enough to pull over.

To make a very long story short, the officer said that if I had slammed on brakes (as most people who see deer tend to do), I likely would have been injured.  He went on to say that if I'd hit my brakes, more cars/hurt people surely would have been involved.

I spent this year's birthday being a bit more introspective than I have in quite a while.  I guess seeing your life flash before your eyes tends to have that effect.  I did a mini Bucket List...what do I want to do between ages 37 and 38? My list includes being on television, taking a girlfriends' trip to the beach and seeing at least one movie in the THEATER a month.

What's on YOUR bucket list?

  1. First off, I am happy you are OK!! Second, Happy Birthday(again)!!

Every birthday I have New Year's Resolutions. I don't like to start it at the beginning of the year like most people. This year: Run a marathon, do a triathlon, get my business up and going, take drawing lessons, get certified in scuba diving, and read 15 books. I have until June 6th 11:59:59 pm to finish this list!!

  4. OMG!!!! Shameeka???????? So glad you are okay. I have often heard, it's safer to hit the deer than to slam on brakes, so you did do the right thing. I am soooooo glad you are okay, I had no idea. Dang, right before your birthday too???? Thank You God, for the Angels that you had looking out for my good friend.

  6. My dad crashed into a deer head on riding his motorcycle a couple years ago - VERY SCARY. What's up with these deer? Are they suicidal?

  7. Oh, gosh yes. Deer are so unpredictable, and they don't seem to be concerned with car traffic. You'd think the city deer would have developed some sort of instict for it by now. I grew up in San Antonio, which used to have wild fringy borders which have now mostly been developed up. Deer and traffic were always problems. Even now they come into some subdivisions. Both of my brothers were in deer/car accidents. I was luckier.

  8. Glad you are ok! I had to laugh at your grammar post. Don't read my blog...I'm horrible. Not because I don't want to get better, it's always been my weakness. Deer can be scary! I grew up in CT and they were everywhere including my parents yard and you always had to be careful because they can come from anywhere. I'm so sorry this happened on your birthday but I'm grateful you have a reason to celebrate that you are ok. Now I look forward to reading about you checking off your bucket list. Mine! Buy a house in Napa to fix over, get my real estate license, go to Italy, and get back into my skinny jeans!

  9. I 'Thank God' that you're fine! Usually, the deer collide with the grill or headlights of cars...your mother and grandmothers' prayers are keeping you! -pearls

  11. So glad that you are okay and did the right thing....I think that I would have slammed on the brakes (the wrong thing). Yes, nothing like almost being smashed by a huge animal to make your take stock of your life! I think that you are going to do great things this year...you are already doing so much!
