Summer Reads: What's On Your Shelf?

The help [Book]
I haven't been able to stop talking about it since I read it a year ago.  You can imagine how thrilled I am that it's been made into a movie.  I'm talking about one of my now favorite books of all time: The Help by Kathryn Stockett.

If you've been under a rock and haven't heard about it, the book is quite the tale of a group of women in Jackson, Mississippi.  The group is comprised of Black maids and their White employers.  The dynamics of the relationships are interesting, rattling, disturbing and sometimes enchanting.

As the granddaughter of women who were "domestics", hearing the other side of the story (though be it fiction) balanced some things out for me.  The only thing that I wish is that Grandmas Pinkie and Sarah were here for me to talk to about it.

Have you read The Help?

What are YOU reading this summer?

  1. I always have to read the book first, before I see the movie. This is on my list to get.

  2. I absolutley love The Help. That book brought out ALL of my emotions. It made me happy, sad, and angry....all the same time once. I read it about a year ago and since then I have been passing on "The Help Love." That book touched me in such a way. 'Til this day when I talk about it with someone my emotions I felt come back. I am happy/mad that they are turning it into a movie. I like to read books before I see the movie and I am usually disappointed. I am hoping they do this movie justice.

  3. Wow! I just wrote about The Help in my latest blog post (http://whydidshedothat.wordpress.com/). It's a great book. I gave it 4 Hearts (4 hearts = Loved it!). I can't wait to see the movie. If you haven't read it, you won't be disappointed.
I also read Bitch Is The New Black recently-a memoir of a almost 30 single professional woman. I give it 3 hearts (Liked it).
I'm now reading (on page 58) Heart of the Matter by Emily Giffin. If you haven't read her books before, you should check her out. She's a great writer.

  6. I haven't read The Help but it sounds like a must. I read Like Water for Elephants and am also elated that it is being made into a movie. It's a great story.

I love this, and have to try this book, sounds great. Hey anyone in Atlanta know of any good book clubs. I have been looking to join one since I got here but have been out of luck. I played with the idea of starting one as a last resort.

  8. I have read it and it really brought back memories for me. I am a white 58 year old woman from California. I spent many childhood summers with my grandparents in Louisiana and the whole black/white dynamic was something I was not prepared for. My grandparents had mainly farm labor help, which they treated very well. But the poverty these folks lived in was something I found appalling. Then there was the drinking fountain issue, and the theatre balcony seats only for blacks. I was amazed and unprepared for the division between blacks and whites which was so accepted in Louisiana and non-existent (to me) in California. That whole experience left a big impression on me as a child. Needless to say, I loved the book and hope the movie has the same power to move the audience.

  10. I love this book. I'm actually finishing it up. I think it would be better as a TV show or mini-series instead of a movie, but I will take what I can get! The only thing I'm worried about is that southern accents are usually terribly inauthentic in movies.

  11. I breezed through this book over a long vacation weekend and loved every page! Then, I read Bloodroot, recommended as a staff pick at Borders--the reviewer said if you liked The Help check out Bloodroot. It was quite different, but just as good--a haunting yet compelling story of family life in Appalachia.
