Modern Manners Monday: What Would YOU Do?



You arrive at an intimate holiday gathering and are greeted by your hostess.

She takes your coat and her hostess gift (of course) and offers you a drink.

"Red wine?", you request.

"Sure", says she, "Is a Pinot Noir OK?"

Your palatte is tickled as you nod and anticipate the stem and its bounty.

She returns and passes your glass.

You lift your glass as a toast to your hostess.

You take a sip and the top of your lip is bumped by a piece of ice.

What do YOU do?

  1. oh my! Ice in wine? maybe she thinks it's icewine? I suppose one would just wait until the ice has had time to melt....I would not want to offend.

  2. Eat the ice subtly haha :) That is totally a drinker's responsibility, not the server's, to add the ice - some people like a cube or two in red wine, but not all!

  4. I'd be pouting on the inside, but just wait it out in reality. On the refil I'd just say "hold the ice, sweetie!"

  6. I would sashay to the kitchen, scoop out the ice, pour some more wine and once I get a buzz say, "Girl, you know red wine does not need to be chilled," through my smile. PBMoe <3

  7. My face would be twisted in confusion! LOL Jesus be a Sommelier! I'd explain to her that I don't take my pinot "on the rocks" ask for a spoon and directions to the nearest sink so that I may dispose of the ice cube. SMH.

  8. I'd be shocked and appalled...on the inside! I would find the nearest spoon and scoop it out and down the sink it goes. Once the hostess and I were alone (assuming she was a friend) I'd let her know that red wine is typically not served chilled and that putting ice in wine (red or white) is not a good idea- no one likes watered down wine! Sometimes ppl just don't know. Someone once gave me a bendy straw with a glass of wine since she was serving cocktails with straws.

  11. Politely say, "Hmm...this is different. I have never had wine with ice." and would allow her to answer. Maybe the hostess just did not know.

  12. STOP. IT! Tell me this didn't really happen? Seriously, I would have gone to the sink and fished the ice out. Just sayin...that would be just as tacky as the ice bein in there in the first place.

  13. I wouldnt dream of saying a WORD! It would be terribly embarrissing for the hostess to correct, complain or even subtly imply, I think to do so would be as big an error as the ice itself and I would just graciously drink what was given to me in kindness.

  16. In this situation I would crunch real hard on the ice...guzzle down that water down wine and fix my own...

    However...Id give that face while doing it...try to find someone else in the crowd who also agrees that this is tacky and make a new friend.

  17. I think it would be really rude to say anything. Get rid of it if you want too, but don't be tacky and say anything. Believe it or not, some people like their red wine chilled.

  18. For me, it depends on the closeness of friendship between the hostess and yourself. A close friend, I would have no qualms about ripping her apart and embarrassing her about it. Someone I don't know as well...I would slink into the kitchen and throw the ice in the sink without saying anything.

  19. After the toast, simply excuse yourself. Retreat to the kitchen or bathroom and remove the ice.
    If you let the ice melt in the Pinot, it may affect the taste of the wine.
