Modern Manners Monday: What Would YOU Do?

Two good friends have asked you out separately on the same evening.  The friends do not know each other. One friend has tickets to the theater...you've been dying to see the show. The other friend is riddled with tremendous problems, needs a shoulder to cry on and wants to meet up at your regular watering hold.

What do you do?

  1. Both. Watering hole first, followed by theater. Tell friend A that you already have plans but that you'll push them back since she's obviously in need. Tell friend B that you're having a drink with sad and needy friend A and will meet her at the theater. Take friend B out for post-show drinks and dessert.

  2. I go to the theater! Invite the friend with problems and offer to treat. I can say this with confidence because right now I'm the friend riddled with tremendous problems. My best friend Amy has been my shoulder to cry on. Sometimes you need to go somewhere and NOT think about your problem. Especially if you have prayed about it. The best way for you to show God you trust Him, is to live. Take a break from the drama you probably can't do anything about at the moment and go have fun! You'll feel better. You'll have a clearer head. Besides laughter releases endorphins that make you feel better and help you keep your "problems" in proper perspective.

  3. I agree with The Frugal Hostess. It's important to make time for a friend in need, but barring an actual emergency it's bad precedent to stop your own life whenever a friend needs a shoulder to cry on. Of course, there is some nuance to this particularly if the friend in need is one who *never* has this sort of problem. In that case, you may want to politely decline the theatre outing. However, if the friend in need is the sort who always seems to be upset about something you can multi-task the evening with little guilt.

Also, if the pre-theatre cry out isn't sufficient, try to meet the friend in need for coffee/breakfast the next morning to make up for the short evening.

  5. Agree with Frugal Hostess too!! Always time in one evening for both things, especially drinks before the theater :)

  6. Theater. The friend will probably still be crying after the show.

  8. I would split that up for sure, spend time equally with both.

  9. I like the idea of both but if that's not possible and she's not a repeat offender be the shoulder. I always say if in doubt do what you'd hope/expect from them as a friend to you.

  10. Hmmm...tough choice. Do the show, and then late night gab fest with Teary?
