Modern Manners Monday: What Would YOU Do?

What's more modern than the technology age in which we all live? Here's a doozy for you:

You repeatedly receive email messages from a friend. A good friend. You've socialized together and even traveled together on occasion. You'd venture to say that she's one of your best friend. When she sends an email, she NEVER uses a salutation and just jumps into the body of her email a la:

From: Me

To: You

A bunch of us are going for drinks on Thursday night. Why won't you join us?

See ya!

OR

From: Me

To: You

The wrapping paper that you ordered from the PTA fundraiser has arrived. Would you like to pick it up or shall I drop it by your office.

What would YOU do?

  1. Dear TBS,

Not sure that would really bother me since I could be accused of doing the same thing.

  2. I think she considered your relationship familiar enough to do away with formalities. Love the image you chose!

  3. I'd always use the salutation myself, see if she caught on, and if not, chalk it up to different styles for different people. Some battles are worth fighting and some are not:).

  4. I think it shows that she values your friendship enough to think that she doesn't have to go through the formalities for a quick note - I say, on with the digital age, if you're really that close, it works :)

Thanks for your comments thus far;-)

  6. Ugh, is it bad to do that? I write emails like the examples above ALL the time... but only to people I consider to be good friends of mine. Lots of people don't even use capitalization anymore - at least I do that!

  7. Dear TBS,

I noticed that you used a salutation in your post. ;-)

    Sincerely,

  8. i have to say...i start my email thoughts in the subject line so mine often look like this:

    SUBJECT: what was the name

BODY: of the hotel you told me about?

and i don't sign them either. i look at the emails i have back and forth with my close friends as one big ongoing dialogue so i don't specifically open and close each formally.

  9. It's an email, so social etiquette for correspondence is not required. If it was a handwritten note, that's a whole 'nother story (as we say in the South!)

  10. I usually start e-mails with "Good morning!" (afternoon/evening) based on either when I'm writing the message or when I expect the person to have a chance to actually see it. It doesn't bother me if someone else does more or less, though.
