The Scoop on GOOP

If you think I'm gaga over Isaac, you're about to learn something new about moi. Here goes (and I need a paper bag because I am nearing hyperventilation as I say this):

I absolutely, positively, foolishly, crazily, heart, love, heart a one Ms Gwyneth Paltrow(aka Mrs Chris Martin). Always have, always will. There. I said it and am now exposed.

As she is one of my many style icons, GP ('cause we're BFFs and I can call her that if I want) exudes style, grace, humility and brilliance. It doesn't seem that we've seen much of her lately but she's been plenty busy.

If you haven't done so already, check out her new lifestyle website, GOOP. If you're a Gwyneth fan, you won't be surprised at the site's simplistic elegance. There you'll unearth a series of newsletters that appeal to our senses and cover most everything from the kitchen to the wardrobe. Isn't the design of the site just wonderful? It's gotten some mixed reviews but I really like it.

Check out the blurb from her home page:

"Make your life good. Invest in what's real. Cook a meal for someone you love. Pause before reacting. Clean out your space. Read something beautiful. Treat yourself to something. Go to a city you've never been to. Learn something new. Don't be lazy. Workout and stick with it. GOOP. Make it great."

I was invited to a dinner party last week and had no clue what to wear. I'd gotten the November 10 edition of the newsletter with "The Little Black Dress" as its focus. Be not mistaken, I do not have Gwyneth's bank account but there was a look that appealed to me; so I thought I'd try to pull it together on a dime.

Check out the look below. Gwyneth is too tasteful to lend prices but I did a little research. She was able to mix some higher end pieces with more budget-friendly choices but I was certain that I could do better:

Topshop dress - approximately $100 based on the average price of the web boutique's dresses
Long Cardigan - $65
Christian Louboutin patent pumps - $600 (let's just assume that GP is not wearing Merona pumps from Tar-zhay)
Yves St Laurent belt - $300

Gwyneth's look total price = Just under $1100

Now meeeeeeeeeeeeeee.....
Avenue black shift - $35 (minus 20% off coupon) = $28 Merona cardigan from Tar-zhay - $20
Skinny brown belt, opaque black tights and black patent pump - Model's own (ha! I've always wanted to say this about myself) - $0 (it's so wonderful to be able to shop your own closet!)

TBS's look total price = Just under $50
Don't we look like twins? Ha!

I love using magazines and other websites as inspiration for pulling together ensembles. It's so much fun. The thrill of the hunt really gets my adrenaline pumping (can't you tell? woo....let me settle down).

What inspires you when you build outfits? Something you've read in a magazine? As seen on TV? Friends? Family?

  1. Good question! You have Gwyneth and I have Jennifer..as in Aniston. I love me some simple stuff. I'm like Jen...she has the body so she doesn't have to worry about too much froo-froo and the simple lines of her style are very flattering to her figure. That's my style. They don't describe me as t-shirt and pearls for naught. ROFL!

  2. TBS... I must say that after sending me GP's newsletter I have fallen in love too! I love her simplistic style. Simplicity is a trend that will NEVER go out of style.

Yes I also use celebrities (the ones that are fashion icons in my book) to create a look and to form my personal style (for cheaper of course :). My two top icons are Eva Mendes (if you have a moment please take a look at her style track) and of course Rihanna. In my opinion these two women exude being vibrant, natural and trendy all in one take!

    Great Post TBS!

  3. Cute outfit! I wouldn't have thought to pair a brown belt with it. I might have added a red belt for pop!
